The Hedstrom 2 in 1 Swing might just be the answer for parent’s quest to find products and toys that will last longer than the average of six months that seems to be the norm with children stuff. It is a great idea that the swing combines a baby swing with a grown up swing that allows you to change both the seat and height of the swing in order to grow with your child. The swing features a blow moulded seat that is height adjustable with ground pegs for additional stability and high-tensile allen key fittings for improved frame strength. The actual frame has been power coated, which means it will be strong and robust as this process means that the paint will not flake off.

The seats:

The baby swing is, in effect, a 1/3rd of the height of a full swing and comprises what will eventually be the top third of the full height swing down as far as the cross-support. The baby seat is a fully moulded plastic seat with a fairly high back and fixed tray. When we looked at the available baby seats the Hedstrom version looked far superior. It looked sturdier and had a higher back which we liked as most parents have a fear that a young child could fall backwards from a swing with a low back. The grown up seat is fairly standard. It is moulded plastic again and fixes with nylon rope to the frame.

Height Issue:

However, one aspect of design that disappointed us was the height of the swing. Every kid on the swing would always want to swing to the stars. The short rope lengths that attach the swing to the frame mean that the swing arc is very limited, and so, the kids might get bored of the swing quite quickly.

Safety:

When it comes to safety, we are glad that Hedstrom has equipped this famous product with five point harness. Most garden swings so not come with one included, however, this 2 in 1 swing does. The high back and chunky seat along with the 5 point safety harness keep kids securely lock in whilst on the Hedstrom 2in1 Swing.

Easy Assembly:

Assembly wise, the Hedstrom 2 in 1 swing is one of those rare outdoor toys that can be assembled with a great deal of ease. The swing comes flat packed and was fairly easy to assemble. Thankfully the rope on both swing parts is pre-fixed and all that is required is that the swing is to be hung from the fixings at the top.

Age group:

The Hedstrom 2 in 1 Swing with 5 Point Harness is suitable for children aged 3 to 10 years and can support a maximum weight of 45Kgs.

Cost effective:

The drum magazine has a clear window in the rear that allows the shooter to know the number of darts remaining while firing. With the first edition value pack, Hasbro offers you an additional 65 darts for a total of 100 darts for you to rain on the targets.

The raider has two main grips akin at actual automatic firearms. The N strike Rapid fire has two rails along the top of the blaster to accept sights from other blasters or mission kits. The shoulder stocks of the Raider and the Recon are interchangeable but it is recommended to stick with the sturdier Raider stock. If the drum magazine feels too bulky, Raiders also accept six-round Streamline clips while the Raider’s drum magazine provides extra capacity to the blasters that use Streamline clips. The Raider lacks the notches to accommodate barrel extension attachments, which is a cosmetic pity.

Firing the Nerf Raider:

Playing with the Raider is extremely simple. After loading the 35 darts into the Drum Magazine, simply pull the cocking handle back, insert the magazine through the connector until it locks in, and push the cocking handle forward to its original position. Now all that you have to do is, just aim and pull the trigger to fire a single dart up to 35 feet. To use slam fire mode, you just have to hold down the trigger and pump the front grip. Each time you pump the grip, the Raider fires a dart. Just like its N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25 Blaster predecessor, the main feature of the CS 35 too is its rapid fire capability. But, after emptying all the 35 darts, reloading each of it into the drum magazine is a very slow process, which is a huge disadvantage during NERF war. Rapid firing can sometimes lead to jamming and luckily, the Raider has features that rectify it, in case of jams. The Blaster has an access hatch and the drum magazine has a rotating knob that aids in removing the jammed darts. Simply open the hatch to remove the jammed dart with your fingers or turn the knob to force the jammed darts out of the magazine.

Performance:

At first, performing slam fire is a little awkward, and you will probably have some accuracy problems when you first get the gun from shaking it while pumping. However, it only takes a little practice until you are able to hold the gun steady while pumping. The rate of fire on the Rapid Fire Raider CS-35 is awesome. The rate of fire on the Rapid Fire Raider CS-35 is awesome. You will probably average about 2.5 shots per second, which is a lot of fun. The range on the Raider is better than we expected, given the firing mechanism of the gun. You can expect to routinely hit anywhere from 25-30 feet. We have not had a chance to mod mine yet, but we have been told that removing the air restrictor can add about 10 feet to the range. This seems believable to me, as the internals look very similar to the Recon, which gets a similar boost from air restrictor removal.

No batteries, All manual:

Unlike the N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25, the N Strike Raider Rapid Fire CS-35 does not need batteries to achieve semi-automatic rapid firing. So, are you wondering how will the gun be able to achieve rapid fire? It achieves rapid firing through “slam firing”, which involves holding down the trigger while constantly pulling the cocking handle back and forth. The darts fire at a rate equal to how fast the shooter can continuously pump the cocking handle. It is a very fast way to cover an area with darts and occasionally hitting a target. The Raider feels like a sub-machine gun while performing like a shotgun with the cocking action and slam firing.

Conclusion:

Whether you are a child or a man-child, firing toy guns at fellow children and man children has always been a fun stress relieving pastime. The Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore is a do it yourself at home kind of kit and the concept is pretty simple. The kit has a transparent hatching net that allows the kids to witness up close the caterpillars transition as it grows double the size each day from chrysalides to beautiful colourful ladies. The entire process of transformation takes just about three weeks. After enjoying the fully grown butterflies, the best practice is to either release them into your own garden or into the wilds. This way, both the little kids and adults will learn and remember the important lesson in life for rest of the life; respect nature’s way.

Receive your set of caterpillars:

All that you have to do to receive your set of caterpillars is, simply post the mail-in coupon and the butterfly larvae with the food will be shipped in directly to your home. The caterpillars will be in a small clear plastic cup and it has a paper seal where the Chrysalis will eventually attach and a plastic cap. At the rear end of the cup, you will find a light brown fudge which will be the caterpillars food and toilet for the first couple of weeks. Home kits come with 5 caterpillars while 33 caterpillar kits are available for the classroom kits. Sometimes, one or more of the larvae may not develop fully into butterflies, but according to the Insect Lore website, at least 3 are guaranteed to do so.

Fun experience:

Our experience with the kit was nothing less than great fun. Once the caterpillars arrived, we behaved just like kids and set it up. For the first few days, the caterpillars seem to be quite drowsy and did not move around much. As all caterpillars, they were grey and pretty small at about 5mm long. By the end of the first week, they were a bit bigger and active too, happily wriggling around the bottom of the cup. In the second week, the changes are quite dramatic as they seem to double in size each day, grown to 2 or 3cms long and quite fat and they had also turned black. By the end of the third week, they are all pretty chunky and put a big dent in the food and made a good deal of mess on the plastic cup. The cup walls seem to be cloudy and seem to have heaps of silken threads around the pot. By the end of the week, they just started to form chrysalises.

Once we found that the Chrysalises have been made and seem to be hanging from the paper seal, they can be gently removed and transferred to the hatching net. We even added some sticks and flowers to the net to make it cosy. The next week we had the beautiful butterflies fluttering around the net. Just feed then with sugar water and given a couple of days to get their strength up and dry out their wings and can then be released into the wild. The overall experience was extremely enjoyable and enriching.

Care:

As far as caring for them goes there is not a lot to do, keep them somewhere well lit but not in direct sunlight, not too hot and not too cold and that is about it, everything they need is in the sealed pot. All you need to do is talk about them with the child, draw pictures and take some photos.

Age limit:

The Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden kit is designed for kids, so physical contact with the insect is limited, almost down to nothing. The only necessary contact that has to be ever done is, transferring the chrysalis from the pot to habitat, but that being a delicate job, it is probably best done by a grown up. What we think about it:

It is not an educational toy by any means hence the low rating for educational value – dogs do not really go on picnics or have special doggie swings let us face it but it is fun and kids need fun as much as instruction and you get more bang for your buck than just buying a Barbie on its own. It would have been really great if the Barbie stood upright when the doggie is pulling her, but that is too much to expect from the doll. The brush included in the package is over sized and looks like a dog brush. But since the dog is made out of plastic, we guess it is for Barbie.

Every kid would love to have one of these at home. The Fisher-Price Bubble Mower makes pretending to mow the lawn great fun. Weighing just 2.3Kgs, the child will never have any sort of trouble in pushing it around your backyard. While the older versions of the Bubble mower were available only in green, this latest model looks very colourful in red, yellow and black plastic and will suite the tastes of the kids. The toy has great ground clearance and all-terrain action on the tyres. What makes the toy so realistic and ultimate fun for the kids is that it is so very realistic electric start key and speed control lever. The updated styling facilitates traction on any terrain ground and long grass.

Durability:

The plastic out of which the mower is made is not hard plastic and will break easily with a few knocks. The bubble wand that slides in top of the mower seems to fall off whenever the mower gets tilted in certain way (easy to get lost). The Bubble Mower’s colour does fade off in sun like most of the colours.
Keep the bubble blowin’ for a whole lotta mowin’ :

Filling up the bubble mover is a breeze to do, well complimented by the special cap for the solution bottle. The new one-touch refill system features a bigger bubble dispenser for fewer fill-ups and the one press refill causes no mess. With just one press you will be good to go for a yard full of bubble fun. The bubble compartment is in the side of the mower. Pour the liquid slowly into the side until you see that there is enough liquid to play. The bubble solution bottle is included in the package.

Realistic:

The knob at turns of back and forth make a sort of clicking noise that will excite the kids. However, their favourite will be the starter; when the starter is pulled, it makes a starting and running sound. The down side to this is that most of the 2yr olds will not be able to pull the little plastic chord. One of the highlight points of Fisher Price about the toy is that, it sounds like a real mower. Well, if your mower actually sounds like that, then you should take it right away and have it fixed.

Package and assembly:

Once the package is undone, you will find the main mower piece, the handle, the bubble solution, a bubble wand and the instructions. All that you might have to do is just put the handle on to the mower; for this you will not need any tools. Just snap it in place on the mower head and now you are almost ready to mow. Once the handle is attached, slide the bubble wand into the side compartment on the mower and you are just ready to add the bubbles. Then fill in the bubbles as we had explained above. A plastic wheel inside the mower turns and air will push bubbles through the plate. However, one main complaint that seemed to be common in most of the user opinions is that there is no actual bubble coming out of the mower. The issue can be easily solved, ensure that the kid has walked about a minimum of 15 to 20 steps at a steady and slow pace for the rear wheels to get in contact with the ground so that it can generate bubbles. The bubble wand is also pretty wide and when the solution is placed in it, the solution does not stay long enough for you to blow in it.

On the upside though, the mower toy can be easily cleaned; all that you have to do is, just spray it down with the water and hose and it is all ready to go again.

Safety:

There are a few safety precautions that must be taken care of while your kid is playing with the Mower. First and foremost, make sure that you advise the kid not to drink the bubble solution. It is quite dangerous to use the toy indoors as the bubble solution is soapy and tends to spill on narrow turns and this might make the floor very slippery. Hence, the backyard gardens are the best place to play. We feel that parental guidance while playing will be a wiser option.

No batteries:

Most of the outdoor toys would need about four to six batteries to be operated. But as far as the Fisher-Price Bubble Mower is concerned, it does not take any battery.

Verdict:

Fisher Price has really done a great job in making the Bubble Mower look realistic, from the black plastic yard wheels to the black moulded handle that has switches and knobs, this toy looks almost real. Though we are sure that your kids will be thrilled to have one of these, we are not sure it would keep them engaged for long with the bubbles taking a long time to show up. The durability of the Fisher Price Bubble Mover is questionable. If you are sure that your kid will be playing with any of the toys for only a couple of weeks, then this mower is well under the budget and will serve their need. But looking for months of fun? Then no, we do not recommend this toy.

The battery case is within the recess in the body to stop accidental damage through usage and it is secured by two screws. Note that the batteries are not provided along with the package.
